Intuition
The dictionary definition of intuition
is "quick and ready insight;" and "the act or process of coming
to direct knowledge without reasoning or inferring." It is derived from
the Latin word "intueri" which means
"to see within." It is a way of knowing, of sensing the truth without
explanations. Someone my not consider themselves to be particularly spiritual
or metaphysically adept yet may be quite good at following their gut instincts.
What goes on in front of the veil (in the conscious mind) is mostly about
survival and procreation, and not much else, so some would say.
Beyond that, things are a bit more of a mystery, and we deal with it
accordingly by lumping things together in fairly broad categories which are
treated somewhat totemically. Whatever we don't
understand we tend to put on a pedestal, treat as a god or a devil. It can be
quite frustrating when we are GETTING the message, but NOT GETTING any logical
reasoning along with it. When a person first becomes alert to intuitive
messages it may seem disturbing not to understand the importance or
unimportance of the messages.
Explanations usually come along with intuitive messages on a "need
to know basis." When the bigger, more important messages need
to surface, they will, so pay
attention! Listen with your heart. We know know
that the heart has many more neurons than it would need just for circulation of
blood.
By following through on your everyday hunches, you are actually taking
test drives, virtually honing in on your listening skills. These skills will
serve you well. Everyone is apparently somewhat psychic, but many people just
have flabby psychic muscles. Learning to listen to your inner dialog tones and
strengthens this muscle. The more you use your intuition the better you get at
it. When we choose to ignore our gut instincts, we are only hurting ourselves.
The holistic or wholistic movement is about healing
this problem.
Listening to your intuition is the essence of art and creativity and
soulful living. Intuition is what you use to find the purpose of your life and
your place in the world. Once you awaken your inner guide by unlocking the
wisdom of your subconscious mind, you already know what to do. Being objective
is harder when you are emotionally involved. It is more mature to admit your
emotions as a factor than to deny them.
In philosophy, intuition is the power of obtaining knowledge that cannot
be acquired either by inference or observation,
by reason or experience. As such, intuition is thought of as
an original, independent source of knowledge, since it is designed to
account for just those kinds of knowledge that other sources do not
provide. Knowledge of necessary truths and of moral principles is sometimes
explained in this way.
Energy is the essence of all that is. The desk in your room that
you see as being solid wood is actually atoms and is not solid at all. In
fact it is a great deal more open space than solidity. Our bodies, when
broken down to their smallest levels are also energetic frequencies. Even
Einstein said that most of his innovation was actually just good guessing. A
talent is something that some people are born with while others have to work at
it. The greatest artists usually study and imitate the techniques of the ones
who came before them. In fact a museum had exactly that as its original
purpose. It was intended as a place to learn techniques, inspiration, and
intuition.
What is intuition? It is the ability to get a sense, vision or feeling
about someone or something. Intuition communicates with us through symbols,
feelings and emotions. It usually does not speak to us in clear language. We
all have intuition. We are born with it. We use it as children we do not know
any better. We go on our instinct or gut. But as we grow older and our rational
and reasonable mind develops, we lose touch with our intuition. We ignore it,
cast it aside forget about it. But like an out-of-shape muscle, intuition can
be strengthened and exercised back into shape.
The easiest method is attention. By focusing on an object, relaxing, and
taking deep breaths, we can retrain our minds to let our intuition surface.
When we concentrate on a single object, once a day, everyday, and block out our
rational mind, we begin the journey to get back in touch with our intuition.. First of all, get comfortable, sit down, relax and take
3-4 deep cleansing breaths. Look at an object in the room, focus, concentrate,
block everything else out. Do this as long at least 3-5 minutes.
Now, close you eyes (if you like) and write down or tape record
everything that comes to your mind how you are feeling, what you are tasting,
noises you are hearing and memories or pictures you visualize. Write everything
down, no matter how insignificant. Don't push yourself let the impressions come
to you. Write down or tape record your good qualities, strengths, talents,
skills, abilities, whatever you enjoy doing - are good at, etc. Try and be as
detailed as possible.
For example, you could be a good writer, good listener,
perceptive, creative, sensitive, empathic, problem-solver, hard worker,
smart, educated, published writer, go-getter with leadership skills,
committed. Or maybe you can think "outside of the box", or have
computer skills, love children, home and community, and desire to help others,
notice when other people are suffering can feel their pain. You might be
gentle, kind, giving, knowledgeable, quiet and friendly. Where in your life is
harmony? Where is there discord?
There has been a resurgence of interest in intuition and psychic
experience in general, and now there are a lot of references in the media. For
a while, at the beginning of the Scientific Paradigm, such things tended to be
discounted or just swept under the rug. When we turn on the TV we rarely even
consider the laws of physics and electronics that cause the TV set to work.
When one of our many gadgets or vehicles doesn't perform, we usually just take
it to someone who understands more about it than we do. If there is an unsolved
mystery, even a stoic detective may now consult a psychic without loosing his
job.
There are well know personalities in the
media discussing such things regularly, and lots of popular books on related
topic. Yes, there is a lot of misinformation and scams galore. Partly due to
the fact that the human need for synthesis and interpretation has only
increased with the complexity of our lives. Gradually we are accepting that
physics and metaphysics have come full circle and arrived at a participatory
universe. When we reach the limits of what can be measured and quantified we
must turn within and consult our inner resources for guidance and insight. It
is well to know something of the skillful means of these principles.
When you listen to your intuition it connects you
with a greater knowledge. That part of you has an overview of your life that
has your best interest at heart. It can provide an oasis of peace in the midst
of chaos, bring you to harmony, help you release negativity, and give you
confidence to take action and prepare for change in your life. It also can be a
valuable guide as you take steps to create your dreams.
